After reports surfaced earlier this week, Hockey Canada confirmed Thursday that head coach Mike Babcock will serve in that same capacity for Team Canada at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Babcock will return behind the bench for the only major tournament he hasnt coached at and look to lead Canada to yet another world title.He will be joined behind the bench by head coach Joel Quenneville, coach Barry Trotz, coach Claude Julien and head coach Bill Peters. Quenneville was the other top choice to be the head coach at this tournament, but Babcock ultimately won out.The former and Mighty of Anaheim coach has never finished a major international tournament as Canadas head coach with anything le s than the title. He was behind the bench for Canada at each of the last two Olympic Winter Games, where they won gold. Babcock has also been behind the bench for a gold-medal-winning World Junior Championship team in 1997 and Mens Travis Hamonic Jersey World Championship team in 2004. On top of his international succe s, he won the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings in 2008. In 2010, he became the first coach to become part of the IIHFs Triple Gold club, which includes individuals who have won the Stanley Cup, Olympic Gold and gold at the World Championship.The Maple Leafs coach was always the natural choice to lead Canada in the rebirth of this tournament. Its in Toronto, many of the same players from the last Canadian Olympic team will be back for the 2016 World Cup squad and Babcock remains one of the most respected coaches in the game. If it aint broke, dont fix it.Canadas stretch of dominance on the international stage has included the last two Olympic golds and golds at the 2015 Mens World Championship and 2015 World Junior Championship. Though the World Cup is kind of a hybrid international event with the European and 23-and-under all-star teams, it will still be a pretty important event for Canada to try to flex their hockey muscles once again in what amounts to the closest thing to a best-on-best outside of the Olympics.
